What Are Freckles?
Freckles are small dots on your face, back, neck, or arms. They are usually hereditary, although they can occur if you are often exposed to the sun. These are small light to dark brown spots that are, most commonly, placed all over your nose, cheeks and forehead area. If not hereditary, they do occur because of melanin, which is your natural pigment that is responsible for your skin and hair color. Freckles are found in both men and women, and they are considered a cute addition to the face.
When Did the Fake Freckle Trend Start?
It may seem like a newer trend, but freckles have been taking over the industry since the early 1960s. The hippy culture was all about sunbathing, enjoying outdoor music and festivals. This meant higher UV exposure, leading to freckles. But before this trend was most loved in the fashion industry and now everyone is hopping on it.
In fact, did you know that people went crazy about freckles after seeing them on Meghan Markle? Everyone wanted to look like a royal princess and that is when everyone fell in love with the idea. Some people have even tattooed freckles onto their face. However, others have found their solution in makeup.
How to Achieve the Fake Freckle Look
Aside from Meghan Markle, beauty gurus and YouTubers have also shed some light on this trend. Also, influencers and Instagrammers have made several beauty clips on how you can get these freckles. Here are some ways on how you can do this on your own and at home.
Use Your Eyeliner
Firstly, make sure you apply your makeup as you normally do. This means prepping, priming and applying your foundation. You can also do your eyes and then move onto the freckles. Also, make sure to not set your face and that you have a liquid pen-tip liner that is either a light or dark brown color.
Once your prepping is done, start placing the dots on your cheeks and across your nose. You look can be subtle or dramatic (it is up to you), just make sure that you are precise. Also, you can place different sized dots on top of your nose, your cheeks and on your forehead. Once you are satisfied with your outcome, use a damp beauty blender and dab the freckles into the skin.
Remember, you can set your entire face with some powder; this is a good idea especially if your skin is oily. By doing so, your freckles will stick and stay in place for hours to come.
Use a Tanning Solution
If you own a sunless tanning product, you can easily use this to make fake freckles. However, make sure that you are working with clean, exfoliated skin. Also, make sure that you use a sunless tanning product that can dry quickly. Dispense a small amount of it into a dish and grab an angled or pointy brush that you will use to pick up the product.
Then, dip the brush into the tanner and start dotting your face. Start out slow and gradually move to create bigger and larger freckles. Once you are satisfied with their color and outcome, let them dry. Keep in mind, you should not apply anything on top of your skin for the next 10 hours. Let the product sink in and you will end up with new freckles for four to five days.
Gel Eyeliner and a Flat Brush
Lastly, this trick works if you own a dark brown gel liner and a small flat brush. Also, your eyeliner should be liquid in texture. Makeup-wise, you should have your base done, but not set in place. You can also do your eyes or come back to them after doing the freckles.
Now, use a small flat brush and dip it into the eyeliner. Take the brush out and make sure that it is coated with the product. Start bending your brush and let the color that is on the brush spritz your face. Make sure that the brush is 5 to 10 centimetres away from your face. By bending it back and forth, the pigment will distribute in random places and will leave you with the most natural outcome.
After you have spritzed and used the brush, let it sink into your skin. Use your favorite mattifying powder and set the rest of your face in place.
What You Shouldn’t Do
In the end, getting fake freckles is not that hard to do. However, make sure that you always avoid these mistakes :
- Never use a long-lasting solution (like henna) since these can be impossible to wash off. If you end up messing up, it will be obvious.
- Never do large sections. Always start out small and slowly proceed onto creating larger freckles.
- Never use black liners, shadows, or colors. They will look unnatural and they will not suit your face, no matter how dark your color or complexion may be.
